Gifted and Talented Provision at Cleeve School
Cleeve School was the first secondary school in the South West to achieve the prestigious NACE Challenge Award for excellent provision for able, gifted and talented pupils. This Award is given for high quality work by the whole school, teachers and governors, in challenging all pupils, including those with high abilities, to achieve their best. Back to the top

Joining the Young, Gifted and Talented programme
http://www.dius.gov.uk/mailshots/_images/articleImages/ygt.gifCleeve School also regularly recommends pupils to the Young, Gifted and Talented programme, where they are offered further opportunities outside the classroom. If you have not yet done so, visit the Young, Gifted and Talented website at http://ygt.dcsf.gov.uk/Landing.aspx?sticky=1 . Pupils must register themselves and will then have access to thousands of online resources to further their knowledge and stretch their understanding in many different subject areas.

Current provision across the school
Across the school, there are a variety of opportunities that will allow able, gifted and talented pupils to achieve their very best. Much of hits provision is common ground to different curriculum subjects and here are just a few examples of the provision that is in place across the school:

  • Ability setting in all subjects where appropriate from Year 7 or Year 8.
  • Fast tracking in English, Science, Maths and Design Technology.
  • All subjects provide a variety of trips and extra-curricular activities which can be used by Gifted and Talented pupils to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
  • Incorporation of monitoring Gifted and Talented Pupils into school mentoring so that specific targets can be set to extend and challenge students.
  • Trips/events focussed on increasing aspiration to elite universities.

Current provision within departments
We have a number of more specific extra-curricular projects for pupils who are gifted in a number of different subjects or talented in Art, Drama, Music or PE. Every department offers different opportunities to Gifted and Talented pupils and just a few of these opportunities are shown below:

  • The English department provides reading lists to stretch the most able pupils and has previously run a GCSE Fast Track trip to a ‘poetry live’ event.
  • The Maths department has a ‘Puzzle of the Month’ competition and holds the National Maths Challenge competition for top sets in Years 9 to 13.
  • The Science department runs Science clubs for a variety of year groups. This allows the more able pupils to develop an interest in Science outside of the classroom environment.
  • Opportunities for talented linguists in Modern Foreign Languages include a French exchange in Year 9 and a Spanish exchange in Year 11.
  • The P.E. department run extra-curricular sporting activities with opportunities to take part in matches against other school. Pupils can also be selected to be part of the Cleeve Athlete Education Programme, which is designed to encourage and educate a select group of talented sportsmen and women through mentoring sessions and workshops.
  • There are a variety of enrichment clubs and competitions in the Design and Technology department. Past examples are the Young Engineers Club, the Formula 1 in schools competition and the Flying Start competition.
  • For our talented musicians, the Cleeve Music department has a variety of music ensembles that all year groups can take part in. There are also foreign music tours to take part in. This year the music tour is travelling to Vienna.
  • The Art department offers art workshops and mural projects. There are also life drawing classes for Years 11 and 12.
  • Within the Humanties subjects, pupils talented in Geography have previously studied landscapes while on a trip to Iceland, the History department ran a trip to the Thackeray Medical Museum and pupils studying R.E. took part in a trip to Rome.
  • The I.C.T. department offers multimedia club to extend pupils’ knowledge and skills in multimedia technology
  • In Business Studies, pupils will have chance to set up and run their own business in Young Enterprise
  • Within Drama, there are opportunities to attend workshops with the Everyman Theatre, and pupils can be given assistance with auditions.

The Scholars Group
At Key Stage 4, we have a Scholars Group which we lead in association with other schools. Its aim is to ensure the highest ambition and achievement for our very able pupils.
Soon to be initiated for the Scholars Group are some ‘amazing grades’ sessions, designed to make sure pupils know and can use the skills they need to achieve their very best in GCSE exams. The Scholars Group will also be invited to take part in a trip to Oxford University. Not only will they get a feel for university life in general but they will experience first-hand some workshops run by lecturers at Oxford University.
