Cleeve School

School Redevelopment

About Cleeve School redevelopment

It has been an ambition of the Headteacher, Allen McConaghie, to redevelop the Cleeve School site since he joined the school in 2000. The school has been in Two Hedges Road for over 50 years and, like many others, has suffered from a lack of funding for buildings. However, following unsuccessful Private Funding Initiative Bids in 2001 and 2003, other forms of financing were found and significant changes became possible.

November 2009: Refurbishment of Modern Foreign Languages

The school is currently developing plans to refurbish the Modern Foreign Languages department of the school to bring it in line with the high quality accommodation throughout the rest of the school.

September 2009: Completion of the refurbished Maths and Humanities block

In September 2009 the school completed a project to refurbish the old Maths and Science block. This project has seen the refurbishment of all three floors of the building along with a new roof and student toilets. The building has a wireless network that is seamless with the rest of the school and has independent study areas as well as classrooms. The building houses Maths, History, Religious Education, Psychology, Sociology and Health and Social Care.

October 2008: Opening of the new building

The new school building opened in October 2008 ending over a year of building work. The copper clad exterior was the vision of Jane Lock-Smith of Cube design and now creates major impact when you arrive at the site. As you enter the building this impact is continued via a huge central two story atrium with transparent  roof and balcony corridors. The new building houses the Science, Music, Learning Skills and ICT departments as well as the schools library ‘explore’ and the administration hub.

Students and staff alike are thrilled by the new facilities; at last, Cleeve students and staff will be in buildings which reflect their own high standards.

March 2007: Opening of Eat, the new school cafeteria.

A further £7.5m was sought and obtained from both the Local Authority and Central Government, adding to the money already allocated to the school redevelopment programme. This allowed for the creation of a plan for major redevelopment. The first part of this was to transform the old Sixth Form Centre into a new cafeteria for staff and students.

The facility is open all day, serving drinks and food to Sixth Formers and providing additional space in which they study. At break and lunchtime the whole school benefits from the comfortable and modern surroundings and healthy food served in Eat. In warmer weather students can relax in the garden and, even when it rains, there is open and airy but covered outside space. If you have a meeting with a member of staff at the school, this too is quite likely to take place in Eat.

May 2006: Opening of the new Sixth Form

Funded by the Local Authority, the £1m Sixth Form Centre and Drama Studio was officially opened on 10 May 2006. Sixth Form students now benefit from bespoke accommodation which allows them space to study in whichever way suits them best including a patio for the summer months.

The Drama Studio is designed and built to the highest standards and is fully equipped with professional standard lighting and sound equipment as well as retractable seating. It has been extremely well received by students and teachers of drama alike, where exam results continue to be outstanding and productions impressive
