Headteacher to parents Letter

16th December 2009

Dear Parents/Guardians

This has been yet another busy term at Cleeve. The refurbished Maths and Humanities block opened at the start of term and represents a high quality learning environment for pupils to enjoy. The first ever Year 12 IB students have started their courses in earnest and have been actively raising money for Breast Cancer charities as part of the community leadership aspect of the qualification. The first courses have now begun at the Launchpad centre in Tewkesbury; this partnership between Cleeve, Tewkesbury and Chipping Campden schools and Gloucestershire College ensures the very widest range of opportunities for our pupils.

The STEM club (Science, Technology and Maths) had a fantastic time making water propelled rockets which were trialled on the playing field and reached heights of over 100m. The Language Department have started to offer free evening language classes as part of our specialist status and are teaching over fifty adults every week. We had a very successful Spanish exchange over the half term holiday and we hosted the first leg of our new European work experience exchange with France. Language pupils also completed a successful four week summer school in Shanghai. Adam Henson, from the BBC’s Countryfile programme, was an excellent speaker at this year’s Achievement Evening. Our first XV rugby team has an unbeaten record this season and has reached the final 32 in the Daily Mail national competition (next match in January) and once again there was an excellent Christmas concert in the Town Hall.

Friday 18th December is the last day of the autumn term and school will finish at 2.15 pm on that day. The spring term commences on Monday 4th January and ends on Thursday 1st April. Please note that Monday 1st February and Friday 19th March are INSET days and that the spring term mentoring evening will be on Wednesday 3rd March. The mentoring afternoon will be on Thursday 4th March and school will finish at 12.30 pm on that day.

Thank you very much for all the generous comments, gifts and good wishes I have received on my retirement. It will be a wrench to leave Cleeve and the young people it serves. We really are extremely privileged to work with such outstanding pupils.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Yours sincerely

S A McConaghie
Headteacher
