| European Day of Languages 26th September 2009
The 26th September is the European Day of Languages and at Cleeve School we want to celebrate the diversity within Europe, where each country has its own culture and language whilst being part of a huge social, economic and political area. There are several events running in school to celebrate the day.
Prize winners for the quizzes, reports and photos will follow next week.
Visiting European Teachers 18 English teachers from 12 different EU countries including Turkey, Croatia, Rumania, Austria, Germany, Spain and Italy spent the day at school on the 10th September. They came to see how English schools are run and were amazed by the politeness and good behaviour of our students. They visited many lessons and said that our school was very well equipped and very modern and clean compared to where they teach. They also noticed how much was going on outside lessons, something which is unusual in their education systems. They would like to pass on their thanks to the pupils and staff for making them feel so welcome!
Boulogne 2009 125 Y7 pupils gathered at 6am in the carpark at Cleeve school armed with massive packed lunches, bags of Haribos, suncream and sun hats, more Haribos, shorts and raincoats, even more Haribos, umbrellas, pens and booklets and oh..let’s not forget…more Haribos. Getting on the coaches and checking names was a military style operation but we set off on time to head down to Folkestone and the Channel Tunnel. There was great excitement as we entered the tunnel and some were surprised not to see any fish swimming past no matter how hard they looked! The weather was kind to us and by the time we reached Boulogne it had stopped raining and we ate and ran around on the beach using up some of our energy. After lunch half the group went to Nausicaa where the best bit was seeing the sharks and the other half invaded the old town at the top of the hill. When we got to the old town we looked around and bought some typical souvenirs – model Eiffel Towers and key rings and loads of us bought bright pink berets and scarves. We bought a drink in one of the cafes and practised our French which was scary! Our last stop on the way back to the tunnel was at Cite Europe where we could get some food and go to the hypermarket to look around and buy some last minute presents. We arrived back at Cleeve at half past one in the morning, really tired but having really enjoyed our day. Boulogne and back in 18 hours – amazing!!
Santillana Smiles! Bleary-eyed and tired but really excited! That’s how we felt as we pulled into the campsite in Santillana, northern Spain after an eventful journey from Cheltenham. Cabins were allocated and then the massive task of unpacking and finally some real food!! Miss Borda ‘encouraged’ us all to try some and even the fussy ones amongst us finally took a few mouthfuls. Not bad actually!
