Cleeve School

Curriculum

Year 7

At the beginning of Year 7 pupils are placed in a Tutor Group, they stay with this group for morning and afternoon registrations, assemblies and some lessons. The security of regularly being with their own Tutor Group ensures that pupils soon lose any of the typical anxieties of being in a “big school”.

The pupils study the full range of National Curriculum subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Art, French, Geography, History, Information Technology (IT), Music, Physical Education (PE), Religious Education (RE) and Technology. In addition to these subjects, the Tutor Group also has timetabled Life Skills sessions with their tutor for Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).

In subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Languages the pupils will be set early in Year 7.This allows a greater differentiation of study and in Languages the most able pupils have the opportunity to learn French and Spanish or Mandarin. Other subjects are taught in their tutor groups.

Year 8

The pupils study the same wide range of subjects most often taught in sets determined by ability. The pupils’ progress is regularly assessed and carefully monitored and there are opportunities for pupils to change sets at convenient stages in the course.

Year 10 and Year 11

In Years 10 and 11 pupils have a core of compulsory subjects and a choice from a wide range of the other subjects including academic and vocational ones.

Lessons in Religious Education continue as a core subject in Years 10 – 11. Although there is an opportunity to opt for Full Course Religious Studies at this level. Pupils follow the GCSE Short Course Religious Education Syllabus, with entry for the examination in Year 11. Aspects of the PSHE Syllabus are taught alongside R.E. and include, Relationships, Contraception, Pregnancy,Abortion, Sexually Transmitted Infections, including HIV and Aids and Drugs Education. Parents wishing to discuss personally any questions concerning the religious education or PSHE provided for their children are asked to contact their child’s Year Head. Parents can exercise their right to withdraw their children from assemblies and sex education lessons by contacting the relevant Year Head.

The curriculum is enriched in Key Stage 4 with careers and citizenship education.

Accelerated Learning

By setting early we ensure that pace and challenge are injected into every lesson, this means that our pupils are high achieving. This accelerated pace has the added advantage that some of our pupils are able to take their GCSEs a year early to enable them to spend more time on their AS and A-Level studies and further elevates their achievement.

Gifted and Talented Provision

Cleeve School is currently the Lead School for Gifted and Talented provision in Gloucestershire. We offer a number of extra-curricular projects for pupils who are gifted in a number of different subject areas or talented in Art, Drama, Music or PE. We also regularly recommend pupils to the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, where they are offered further opportunities outside of the classroom.

In KS4 we have a Scholars Group which we lead in association with other schools. Its aim is to ensure the highest ambition and achievement for our very able pupils.

The Access Programme

The Access Programme is designed to offer support to pupils who may struggle with some of the challenges that face them at secondary school, these will include difficulties with literacy and or numeracy. Our Head of Personalised Learning liaises with local primary schools and parents to determine those pupils who may require such support to ensure that this is ready when pupils arrive in September.

For the small number of pupils who take part in this programme they will follow an alternative curriculum; instead of studying a language they will receive additional lessons in literacy and numeracy. During these lessons, teachers are able to intervene at the point of miscomprehension and assist pupils. These lessons are also used to support pupils with their studies in other subjects.

Vocational Guidance

From Year 7 to Year 13 pupils at Cleeve are offered guidance on employment, careers and courses in further and higher education. This guidance begins in Year 7 as part of the Life Skills and the Tutor programme. Our objective is to raise aspirations and to ensure that all of our pupils progress onto an appropriate career path that they have chosen with our help and guidance. The majority of our pupils continue education into our sixth form and then proceed to Higher Education.

The Careers and Worked Related Learning sessions and activities in Years 10 and 11 are built around the key learning outcomes of self-awareness, opportunity awareness, decision-making, information seeking and careers research. We aim to give pupils an awareness and understanding of the world of work. To this end pupils undertake a whole week’s Work Experience in Year 10, for many this experience is vital in guiding important choices about their future
