Pastoral Care
Pastoral care is one of the important means by which we enable children to achieve their full potential, enriching his or her personal life, assisting in allowing informed decisions to be made, and offering guidance and counselling to bring about the required self discipline to support teaching and learning. We value the partnership of mutual support between teachers, parents and pupils and keep personal achievement at the heart of our pastoral care programme.
The main pastoral structure is a year structure and the form tutor will oversee pupils’ personal welfare and progress. The tutor will always be accessible to pupils for support and advice, and will help in all matters related to academic performance. The tutor is the first point of contact for parents. The Head of Year has an oversight of the welfare and progress of all pupils within a year group.
All pupils can expect to be mentored during their time at Cleeve. The purpose of this is to encourage each pupil to seek to maximise their own learning, setting realistic and obtainable targets. Mentoring is carried out by the mentor on a termly basis and is conducted through a triad meeting between parent, pupil and mentor. During this session, assessment profiles and effort grades are reviewed and targets are set for future development. These targets are revisited by tutors and subject teachers throughout the academic year.
Some pupils may receive additional support from our Life Coach. We also run a peer-counselling system where our KS5 pupils work with some of our younger pupils.
On entry to Cleeve each tutor group is allocated to a House. Each House has a team of tutors and Head of House. The House system supports both pastoral and academic achievement; this includes House sports matches, public speaking competitions and music festivals, amongst others. Pupils throughout the school are awarded House Credits for effort, attitude, achievement and progress.
Mentoring empowers the student to take responsibility for their own learning, which prepares them for life.”
